요즘에는 개보다 고양이를 애완동물로 선호하는 경우가 많습니다. 

고양이는 차갑다는 고정관념에서 벗어나면서 

고양이만의 장점을 찾기 시작한거죠 ㅎ 

아래 애완용과 야생고양이를 구별해보는 퀴즈가 있습니다. 

사진을 보고 구별해야 하는데요, 

제가 해 본 결과 

저는 구별하는데는 소질이 없어보이네요 ㅋ 

전 세계에 분포해 있는 고양이들을 구경하는 재미도 쏠쏠하네요^^

고양이는 귀엽다. 그것이 왜 우리 중에 많은 사람들이 고양이를 애완용으로 데리고 있으며, 왜 인터넷에 고양이 사진이 많은가를 설명해 줄 수 있을 것이다. 

Cats are cute. That may help explain why so many of us have cats as pets, and perhaps why cats appear to have taken over the internet. 

But here at BBC Earth, we want to take you beyond the everyday, and show you the wonderful world as it really is. 

오늘날 실제적으로 37여종의 야생고양이가 살고 있다. 

There are actually around 37 species of wild cat living today. 

사자와 호랑이 같이 많은 사람들이 알고 있는 큰 고양이들과는 다르게, 많은 야생 고양이 종들은 작고 희귀하며 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 

Unlike the big cats many people recognise, such as lions and tigers, many wild cat species are small, rare and little-known. 

그러나 고양이들은 우리가 집에 모시는 애완동물로서 찬양할 만할 가치가 있으며, 훨씬 더 멸종위기에 처해있다. 

But they are just as deserving of our adoration as the pets we keep at home, and far more endangered. 

그래서 그들에 대한 관심을 높이기 위해, 우리는 고양이 컨테스트를 열기로 했다. 

So to help raise their profile, we thought we would create our own cat challenge. 

당신은 아래의 어떤 것들이 야생 고양이인지, 그리고 어떤 것들이 애완용 고양이인지 알 수 있나? 

Can you spot which of the following are wild cat species, and which are breeds of everyday moggy?

Wild or pet?

Cat A: WILD

우리는 어려운 고양이종부터 시작했다. 이 종은 아프리카 야생고양이다(Felis silvestris lybica): 살쾡이의 아종으로, 집고양이에서 유래되었다. 아프리카 전역에 서식하며, 애완용 얼룩고양이와 생김새가 흡사하여 들판에서 구별하기란 쉽지 않다. 이러한 고양이들은 관련 아종인 유러피안 살쾡이와는 다른데, 왜소한 체격, 뚜렷하지 않은 무늬, 그리고 얇고 끝이 가는 꼬리를 가졌다. 

We started with a difficult felid. This is an African wildcat ( Felis silvestris lybica ): a subspecies of the wildcat, the species from which domestic cats are descended. Ranging across much of Africa, they look so similar to pet tabby cats that they can be difficult to distinguish in the field. These cats differ from European wildcats, a related subspecies, by their lighter build, less distinct markings, and thin, tapering tails. 

Cat B: PET

이 은밀한 고양이과는 아비시니아라고 불리는 애완종인데, 미국에서 털이 짧은 고양이 중에서 가장 유명한 종이 되었다. 유전적 연구에 의하면 아비시니아와 에티오피아 지역이라고 처음 생각되던 것과는 다르게 이집트 연안에서 처음 생겨난 것으로 나타나고, 아시아와 유럽종들이 모두 애완종을 만드는데 기인한 것으로 보인다.  

This furtive feline is a domestic breed, known as the Abyssinian, which has become one of the most popular breeds of short-haired cat in the US. genetic studies show that domestic cats from both Asia and Europe were used to create the bread, which first originated on the Egyptian coast, not in Abyssinia, Ethiopia as first thought.

Cat C: WILD

절대 쉬워지지 않는다. 이 종은 당신이 일반적으로 알고 있는 줄무늬종이 아니다. 아프리카의 가장 작은 고양이과의 검은발 살쾡이로서, 전 세계에서도 가장 작은 종에 속한다. 남부 아프리카 지역의 보츠와나, 나미비아 그리고 남아프리카 공화국 세 나라에서만 발견된다. 인간의 활동이 그들을 숫자를 위협하고 있다. 새끼를 지닌 암컷이나 짝짓기 시기를 제외하면 단독으로 다닌다. 국제적인 멸종고양이 보존협회에 따르면 검은발 살쾡이들은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 강인한데, 원주민들은 이 작은 종이 기린의 수를 감소시킬 수 있다고 한다. 하지만 이것은 거짓인데, 이렇게 겉잡을 수 없는 작은 살쾡이들에 대한 확고한 결정에 경의를 표하기 위한 것이다. 

It is not getting any easier. This is not your average tabby. This is a black-footed cat ( Felis nigripes ), Africa's smallest felid, and among the smallest wild cat species in the world. Black-footed cats are found only in three countries of southern Africa: Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Human activity threatens their numbers. Black-footed cats are solitary, except for females with dependent kittens, and during mating. According to the international Society for Endangered Cats, black-footed cats are incredibly tenacious: native peoples even have a legend claiming these tiny cats can bring down giraffe. While this is untrue, it pays homage to the fierce determination of these feisty little felines.

Cat D: WILD

아마도, 귀가 단서가 된다. 스라소니 중에선 가장 큰 종인 유라시안 스라소니 ( lynx lynx ). 러시아의 북방림에서 중앙에 이르는 서유럽, 동아시아 그리고 티베트 고원까지 서식하는 고야이과 중에서 가장 넓은 활동반경을 가지고 있다. 서식지 파괴, 사냥 그리고 올가미로 인해 10만여 마리만 남아 있다. 대부분의 애완 고양이종보다 크며, 유럽 스라소니는 무게가 15-29키로가 나간다. 

The ears are a clue, perhaps. This is a very young Eurasian Linx ( Lynx lynx ), the largest lynx species. It has one of the widest ranges of any wild cat, found from western Europe through the boreal forest of Russia to central and eastern Asia and the Tibetan Plateau. Fewer than 100,000 remain, due to havitat loss, hunting and fur trapping. Larger than most domestic cat breeds, Eurasian lynx can weigh 33-64lb (15-29kg).
